Copywriting VS marketing

I'm curious as to what is better - to go into, say, copywriting wholehearteely and inveet all my energy into just copywriting or is it better to focus on marketing as a whole and do various things, not specializing in anything in particular (SEO, affiliate,...).

Someone has told me that it's best to just pick one specific niche like copywriting and go into it 100%. So i am wondering if that is true, or is it better to just become an "all-around" good marketer, having expertise in various fields like SEO, affiliate marketing, SEM, copywriting...

I suppose if you wanna matket a product, you have to write blogs, and if you wanna write blogs you have to have copywriting experience as well as SEO knowledge so all these fields intertwine with each other and build on top of each other?

I am a beginner btw (if that is not obvious). Thanx for the advice.

My best advice is for you to get started.

All your questions will answer themselves over time.

It seems to me that you (and others like you) are looking
for excuses to procrastinate getting started by asking various
people what they think about what you should do.

The reason I think this is because that's what I used to do.

    Make excuses.
    Procrastinate.
    Research things to death.
Ask everybody else what I should do.
    Should I do Plan A, B, C, X, Y or Z?

Just get busy doing something and everything will be fine.

    Hi Zendo

You need to start from figuring out how you plan to monetize the skill you choose and what your ultimate goal is. If your goal is to have a blog remember that copywriting is not the same as content writing. Almost anything can be outsourced so first figure out your ultimate goal is.

The best way to avoid wasting time is to find one thing and stick to it. Many people waste just as much time online as they do offline because they flip between so many different ideas.

You can use writing skills to help you with almost every aspect of your online journey. Copywriting is a career that will open up many opportunities and over time you will learn more.

Let me answer your question with another. Lets say you want to clean your house is it better and more time efficient to focus on one task at once until it gets done or run around your house doing little parts of each task until it is done.

The answer is to focus on one thing. The only question you need to make money online with is to ask "Is someone making money with this skill online right now?" This validates the business model you are going into. Then you focus up on that one business model learn everything about it. Also look at the top earners in your chosen niche. Look at everything they did to get where they are. Reverse engineer their success. Then work on that one thing.

I have done this bounced around from idea to idea never really working on one. It leaves you jaded, drained and still broke.

Most of these people who achieve success focused on one thing and learned it well. They didn't worry about whether they were in the right business or what other people were doing they validated the business reverse engineered the process and then worked hard on it. They learned from every failure and they reformulated and kept working until they succeeded.

Most entrepreneurs are not lucky they are hard workers. Good luck and let me know how it goes.

All good advice above. Let me add one thing... Copywriting is great but the more you get into it, the more working for others sucks, and most successful copywriters will give you advice to go "clientless", meaning you should use your copy skills to make yourself rich.

So, copywriting is a good choice. Just keep this in mind as you go.

Learn to craft compelling offers. Traffic is simple to get. But without a good offer, you won't make money. It's all about the offer.

Copywriting is a subsection of marketing. Marketing has many, many aspects.

You're, usually, better off focusing your effort on one, small thing, till it makes you good money. Then, you add another aspect. You conquer that aspect, then repeat.

Copywriting requires you to like writing enough that you can put in hours and hours, if you're going to make a living at it. Also, that you're good at it and at psychology.

You can go a (big) step lower and focus on content writing (home pages, articles, blog posts, facebook posts). Pay is lower but it's easier to get clients.

If you go the copywriting route: write copy for yourself. If anyone hires you from that, you've got proof that it works. If lots of people hire you from that, you've got proof that it works well.

Once upon a time, I sent a sales letter for my writing services, via email First reply that came said something along the lines of: Damn, that's a good letter. When can you start?

There were other replies that went well, though their first contact was not that effusive.

Point is, whether you go the copywriting way or the broader way, you can use you as proof / to get clients.

Master one way of making money first: facebook ads, SEO, sales letter, does not matter what. You get happy faster.

    Excellent insights above.

You would need to market your Copy Writing offer and your marketing needs great copy. Neither can be avoided.

Both become continued learning and application.

Some teach copywriting and some get paid for creating copy.

You could even sell content on copywriting niche.

    All that would be marketing.

So there is no "VS" only the fact that great copy and marketing can earn us a decent living in an unlimited amount of ways.

  • Hi Zendo,

You have a skill that many people don't have and that Google rewards handsomely.

The key is to use your copywriting skills writing unique, useful content to readers and that you do it regularly.

Of course write about stuff that you know of or are passionate about and set up a blog.

For example if you know about IT, set up a blog advising small business that want to go online or improve their website performance with webhosting, marketing tools etc. And best thing is that there are tons of tech companies in this space offering high commissions.

    Good Luck!

You can only learn one thing at a time. Take time to master one thing at a time. You may find it would probably take you months and even couple of years to become really good at copywriting, or any one skill or niche that you take up.

You will need to practice a lot, follow some of the current experts and learn a lot from watching videos, reading blog posts and gaining experience. Stop putting a burden on yourself by trying to get into too many things at once.

And any day it is better to be very good at one thing than to be so so at dozen things. So take your pick - do you want to be very good at one or two things or want to be mediocre at many things and keep struggling for a long time.

Copywriting is an essential skill in marketing. It was taught in our advertising class back in college. It was pretty basic but essential.

Bluntly, you're not a marketer if you don't know the basics of copywriting.
